The collection includes three main types of record:
1. Folders of sketches of mill and factory buildings and machinery and explanatory text by Wightman.
2. Boxes of ephemeral notes, photographs and engineering catalogues collected by Wightman in the process of making the drawings.
3. Large painted exhibition boards showing final versions of the sketches for exhibition - these seem to be works commissioned by the Greater Manchester County Council in 1976.

In December 1976 Mr Frank Wightman, a retired master mill-wright living in Stretford was commissioned to produce drawings of mills, mill-engines, chimneys etc in the Greater Manchester area from the drawings he had made whilst working for George Saxon's and other engineering firms between the 1930s and the 1960s. Many of the mills and their engines had by then disappeared or been radically altered. The grant was made on condition that the drawings became the property of Greater Manchester Council.
