The estates and mill described in the particulars and plan were auctioned in 1867 as the property of the late Peter Arkwright (grandson of Sir Richard Arkwright). The Mellot estate and mill were originally owned by Samuel Oldknow, who built the mill in 1790. Due to financial problems Oldknow mortgaged the mill to Sir Richard who took possession of it on Oldknow's death in 1828.
