Burnage, in the Parish of Manchester, was a separate township for Poor Law purposes with its own Churchwardens and Overseers until 1837, when it became part of the Chorlton-on-Medlock Union of Poor Law Guardians. In 1910 it was merged with other townships to form the Township of South Manchester. From 1894 Burnage came under the Withington Urban District Council, which in 1904 was incorporated with Manchester.
