Cheetham in the Parish of' Manchester, was a separate township with its own Overseers of' the Poor and Highways under the Manchester Church Wardens until 1838, when it became part of the new Borough of Manchester. It retained its own Overseers and its affairs were dealt with by the Cheetham Committee of the Borough Council until the end of 1875. In 1841, the township became a member of the Manchester Union of Poor Law Guardians, which was set up under the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1841. From 1850 to 1896, when it was merged into the township of North Manchester, Cheetham was a member of the Prestwich Union, constituted by order of the Poor Law Board in 1850.
