Custodial history:
Clayton, in the fourteenth century, was a sub-manor of Manchester but later formed the western part of the township of Droylsden. A local board for Droylsden was formed in 1863, but in 1890 the Clayton portion was taken into the City of Manchester. The remaining eastern portion is now the Urban District of Droylsden. For Poor Law purposes Clayton was added to the Prestwich Union in 1894 and in 1896 was consolidated with other townships to form the township of North Manchester.
