Harpurhey, in the Parish of Manchester, was a separate township with its own overseers of the poor under the Manchester Churchwardens until 1840 when it became part of the new Manchester Union. In 1885 Harpurhey was incorporated in the City of Manchester. For Poor Law purposes it was in the Manchester Union from 1841, being transferred to the Prestwich Union, along with other townships, in 1850 and being merged with others to form the Township of North Manchester in 1896.

These records were transferred from the Rates Department and the Committee Clerk's Department in the Manchester Town Hall in 1958.
