The Society was founded in Oct. 1843 as Bennett St. Sunday School Mutual Improvement Class. From 1855 to 1962 it issued a manuscript magazine 'Odds and Ends', which include articles and illustrations by eminent men of the time, including George Milner M.A., J.P., its editor for sixty years, Charles Rowley, M.A., J.P. and art expert, Walter Butterworth, M.A., J.P., W. Tatton Winter R.A. and L.S. Lowry, R.A. They cover contemporary events of national importance like the Crimean War and the First and Second World Wars, and leisure activities like music, art, literature photography and holidays.
