Opened 1810 at New Bridge Street, Strangeways, for the purpose of 'providing education and training in domestic service or other useful occupations for maintaining girls, mostly orphans, being children of poor parents of good education'.Moved to Bury Old Road in c.1911 and then to Lerryn, Carr Wood Road, Cheadle Hulme in c.1946.Merged with the Boys and Girls Welfare Society in April 1959 (now the Together Trust).

The majority of the collection was donated to Manchester Central Library in April 1966 by Mr. A.W. Lombers of Urmston.
