The Greater Manchester Residuary Body was created by the Local Government Act of 1985 which abolished the Greater Manchester Council along with the other Metropolitan Counties in England. It shadowed the Council until the latters abolition in April 1986 and then started work on issues left outstanding by the County Council.
The main issues were the sale of Council property especially County Hall (now Wetsminister House) and the winding up of local goverrmemt's involvement in the regeneration of Central Station which at the time had been re-named GMEX (now the Manchester Central Convention Complex). This was a joint venture with the Commercial Union and also included a project to refurbish the Midland Hotel. These papers form the bulk of this archive. The remainng documents record the minutes and agendas of the Residuary Body, the sale of County Hall & Magnum House, handbooks of the County Council, elecion results and financial information on local government during the 1974-86 perioed.
The Residuary Body was wound up in 1989.
