Custodial history:
These letters and notebooks of the Royce family of Seaton Mill, Uppingham, Rutland, were purchased by the Library in January 1968. Most of the letters are written by Charles Royce while tutor of the children of Rev Charles Girdlestone, rector of Alderley, Cheshire and the children of Thomas Turner, surgeon, of Manchester. His brother Henry was probably Henry William, grandfather of Sir Frederick Henry Royce. A notebook of George Royce describing his and Charles's journey from Liverpool to Scotland in 1839 is quoted in 'The Life of Sir Henry Royce' by M Pemberton (926.2 R8, pp 21-26) while Charles Royce is mentioned in 'A Relative Memoir of Thomas Turner, 1878' (926.1 T6, p124). A transcript of George Royce's notebook was presented to the Library in February 1996 by Mr M F R Willison, a descendant of Sir Henry Royce's sister, Mary.
