W E A Axon (1846-1913) was a well known local literary figure, Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, and member of several other learned societies. He was Sub-Librarian of Manchester Free Library 1867-1874, when he joined the editorial staff of the 'Manchester Guardian'. For an account of his life, see 'Dr Axon - Manchester Bookman' by R Walmsley in the 'Manchester Review', Summer/Autumn 1964 (O17.442 M62). These papers were probably used by him to write in 'An Architectural and General Description of the Town Hall Manchester 1878 (f725.13 M1).
