This society is the amalgamation of the Royal Institute of Chemistry and the Chemical Society. The unification of the two was being discussed and gradually implemented during the period 1972-1980. There were joint meetings of the Chemical Society and the Royal Institute of Chemistry, Manchester and District Section from April 1974 although the national councils of the two bodies were still separate. The Royal Society of Chemistry was eventually formed in 1980
