Custodial history:
The Manchester and Wilmslow Turnpike Trust originated from an Act of Parliament of 26 George II (1763) to continue and render more effectual Acts of 11 George 1, 3 George II and 22 George II for repairing the road from Sherbrooke Hill near Buxton and Chapel En Le Frith thorough Stockport to Manchester, and for repairing the road from School House in Didsbury to the Bridge in Wilmslow and for erecting a a bridge over the River Mersey. An Act to continue and render more effectual the same was passed in 1764 and in 1793 there was a new Act for repairing, widening, altering and diverting the road from Ardwick Green to the new bridge at Corn Mills, Wilmslow. The powers of the last Act were continued in Acts of 1799, 1818, 1830, 1861 and 1881. The Turnpike Trust came to an end in 1881 and its powers and finance were taken over by the Local Boards of the Township through the road passed.
