See also deposit 109. The donor's mother (whose maiden name was Graham) married 3 times, the donor being the 2nd son by her first marriage. His father, who was a carter, died when the donor was 2 years old. Her second husband, Mr. Vaughan, was killed in the First World War. The third husband was a Mr. Booth. The donor went to Ordsall Council School, then to St. Clement's when 11. He left at 13 and did odd - jobs (coffee grinder, nut tapper). He ran away to sea at 16, jumped ship and enlisted. He was a soldier for 12 years. His wife's maiden name was Bessel.
