Hannah Mitchell was a suffragette, going to prison for three days for her part in a demonstration at Belle Vue in 1908. She became a Labour Councillor for Newton Heath in 1924 and a magistrate in 1925. The Library also has her typescript autobiography (MS 920.7 M65) which was edited by her grandson, Geoffrey Mitchell, as The Hard Way Up in 1968.
The papers were given to the Library in c 1936 (M220/1) and 1956 (M220/2-5) by her son, F.G. Mitchell.
