John Ernest Phythian, (1858 -1935), M.A., solicitor, lay preacher, University Extension Lecturer and authority on Art, Councillor for Cheetham Ward, 1892- 1898, and Chairman of the Manchester City Art Gallery Committee, 1895-1898. Most of the papers relate to the activities of J.E. Phythian and his father, Joseph Phythian of Cheetham, smallware manufacturer and member of Manchester School Board.
