Margaret's father, William Wales, came from Scotland via Nottingham to Manchester where he was initially involved in the hosiery trade. The family settled in Kensington Street, Moss Side and due to a contact in their local chapel William went into the grocery business. After World War One he had saved enough money to start his own wholesale tea, cigarettes and sweets business. Had 3 children, Margaret, Sarah and William. Margaret started work as a machinist, later became a typist and finally ran her father's business until the shop was pulled down in 1960's.
