A meeting of members of the British Astronomical Association living in the Manchester area was called by E. Walter Maunder, F.R.A.S., Editor of the Journal of the B.A.A., for 18 Jan. 1892 in Manchester and it was decided to form a local branch of the Association. In 1903 it broke away from the parent body and became a separate society, the Manchester Astronomical Society.
