By profession a solicitor, Maurice Pariser became a Labour councillor in 1946. Being particularly interested in education and the arts, he served on the education committee and the libraries committee, of which he was chairman, 1959/60-1961/62. His correspondence with Lady Simon reflects the transition to comprehensive education in the 1950s. He was leader of the City Council from 1962-1963 and became an Alderman in 1963. He was knighted in 1965. Sir Maurice was governor of several schools including Manchester Grammar School and Manchester High School for Girls and chairman of the Council of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, a member of the Council of the University of Manchester, a governor of the National Theatre and a member of the North West Economic Planning Council. He was chairman of the Arts Centre Sub Committee set up to study the feasibility of a centre comprising a major extension to the City Art Gallery, an opera house , a film theatre and a conventional theatre. His hobby was book collecting and he made a study of literary forgers of the past.
