Mrs. Wolfenden's paternal great-grandfather from Pontypridd. A roadbuilder, he worked his way up to Manchester by 1850 and then built 5 pubs - `The Shakespeare' (Ardwick), `The Didsbury' (Didsbury), `The Talbot' (Stretford), `The Seymour' (Chorlton) and `The Britons Protection' (Junction of Great Bridgewater Street and Lower Mosley Street, Manchester). His son, J.E. Chapman, ran `The Shakespeare' and became chairman of Manchester City F.C. Mrs. Wolfenden's father, Harold, born in `The Shakespeare' in 1879; he was apprenticed as a furniture designer to Waring and Gillow on Deansgate; then, in 1909 took over `The Shakespeare' then moved to `The Locomotive' in Openshaw, then `The Malcolm' in Openshaw. Went to Stretford when Ford opened their works in Trafford Park, and then `The Red Lion' in Prestwich.
Mrs. Wolfenden was born in `The Shakespeare' in 1909.
