Custodial history:
The original chapel of St. Clement's, built in the 16th century was demolished in the late 18th century and a new building erected. This was enlarged in 1837. In 1866 a new church was built nearby, but the old church continued to be used until 1940 and was demolished in 1949. The township of Chorlton cum Hardy was assigned to St. Clement's by Order in Council, 14 September 1838 (London Gazette, 29 March 1839). Its boundaries were defined by Order in Council 8 June 1854 (London Gazette, 16 June 1854) and slightly altered by Order in Council, 24 June 1856 (London Gazette, 1 July 1856). In 1898 part of the parish was assigned to the new District of St. Werburgh's, Choriton cum Hardy, by Order in Council, 9 August (London Gazette, 12 August 1898). In 1950 the boundaries were altered when part was added to St. Johns, Old Trafford, and part received from St. Matthew's, Stretford, by Order in Council, 27 November (London Gazette, 2 December 1930). In 1958 part was added to St. Hilda's, Old Trafford, by Order in Council 11 September (London Gazette, 12 September 1958).
