Mrs. Dunne's husband's parents, both born in Barrow Street, Salford, moved to Pendleton and then settled in Gorton. The father worked in an iron foundry in Salford and then moved to Bayer-Peacocks, locomotive-builders, in Gorton, because of the time it took to travel to Salford. At Bayer's he chipped flaws off wheels as they came out of the furnace. He was also an active trade unionist - District Secretary of Steel Workers Union.
Mrs. Dunne's parents were both from Wigan, Mrs. Dunne was born there. Mrs. Dunne's fathe was a coal miner in Wigan, then a blast furnaceman for an armaments firm owned by Krupp's, he lost his job there when the firm was forced to close down because of Post World War I anti-German feeling. The family moved to Blackley when Mrs. Dunne was six years old and her father got work at the Railway-Carriage Sheds in Newton Heath. He lost job during depression, did a variety of odd-jobs then finally went to Avro's, working on aeroplanes. Mrs. Dunne's mother worked during the depression to enable her son to go through college.
