The N.S.M.M. was founded in 1872 in Birmingham and subsequently district branches were formed. Earlier records of Manchester Branch were destroyed when the office moved premises.

These records were deposited in July 1980 by the branch and district Secretary, Mr. G. Husband per. Manchester Polytechnic Archive Retrieval Unit. A further deposit (m378/2/1/4-34 & m378/2/2-3 was made by A Higginson in January 1988
