Mr Formby was born in Eastbourne in 1921. His parents moved to Manchester when he was 2. He could not recall why as they both died when he was young but he knew his father came from Liverpool and after fighting in the 1st World War came to Cheetham and worked at the top of Elizabeth Street as a French polisher. He went to schools in Salford in Marlborough R Garnet Street and Leicester Road. He was at various times a rent collector and in the joinery business. His parents married in 1919.
