The donor's father and grandfather were painters and decorators. His mother's family, the Butterfields, lived in Autumn Street, Horwich. His mother had several sisters one of whom, Susan worked in the Beehive Mill, Horwich, as a towel weaver. Her fiance was killed in World War One and she never married. She had a quarrel with the donor's mother, which resulted in their not speaking to each other for 20 years. Susan was disliked by most of the family. The donor's family attended a Spiritualist Church in Horwich.
