Donor, Marjorie Holt, born 1920. Her mother, Mrs. Nelson, born 1887. Donor's grandfather (see 538/8) came from Staffordshire, worked on the Manchester Ship Canal, and lived in Irlam. Donor's father Mr.Nelson worked in Shude Hill Market, and regularly came home from work drunk. Later worked for Co-op in building dept. Donor's husband born 1913. His grandfather worked nights in the pit until the age of 83. His father worked at the Huyton Bleachworks at Adlington. Donor's mother entered service at 15, working in Urmston and living in Irlam. At a house in Scotland (see 538/15) where they stayed there was an old lady with a pony and trap who, Mrs. Nelson thought looked like Queen Victoria. The family moved to a cottage on the coast for a further 2 months' holiday. Mrs. Nelson was paid 2/6d a week, plus keep, and had to pay for breakages. She married at 19. Mr. Nelson was the son of a blacksmith, whose brothers judged farrier's classes at shows. Mr. Nelson was a brilliant scholar and passed for Cambridge, but his father would not let him go, so he went into business.
