The donor was born in 1889, in the Farmhouse, Springfield, Lower Crumpsall, (now demolished). The Farmhouse had been in her family since her great grandfather's time. (He was a farmer and one of six children). Her father was a sign and glass writer. He married the donor's mother when she was 23. At 14, Miss Howarth went to work in Blackley in a factory making overalls in 1913. Late in c.1916 they started making uniforms for soldiers. In 1919 she went to work at Springfield Hospital in the sewing room and stayed there until 1959. She has lived in Lower Crumpsall for 70 years.
