Mr Latham's father was a cooper with a Wigan Brewery which was taken over by Magee, Marshall & Co. of Bolton. Mr. Latham senior then moved to Bolton to work at Magee Marshall's Crown Brewery. Mr. Tom Latham (respondent) served a 7 year apprenticeship as a cooper and worked for Magee's for 49 years until it was bought out by Greenhall Whiteley. Greenhall closed the Crown Brewery and established a modern brewery at Warrington.
