Custodial history:
The Lomas and Murgatroyd families were united by the marriage of Mary, daughter of George and Mary Lomas, with Joshua Murgatroyd in 1848, and further by the marriage of their daughter Mary Lomas Murgatroyd with her cousin Thomas George Lomas, son of her mother's sister Elizabeth and her cousin Thomas Lomas in 1898. Both families were Methodists. George and his brother Thomas, having come to Manchester from Derbyshire, joined London Rd. Sunday School and all George's children were involved as Sunday School teachers. Their letters, though chiefly about family affairs, include many references to London Rd. Sunday School Joshua Murgatroyd, father of Mary, came to Manchester from Yorkshire and soon joined the London Rd Methodists. In 1852 he went to work in Stockport and became an important figure in the Stockport North Circuit. His Methodist faith and that of other members of the family are particularly evident in several documents in this archive The letters also include descriptions of Southport, 1838-1844, Lytham, 1842 Fleetwood, 1843-1844, Lancaster, 1846, Ireland, 1846and Malta, 1863, life in a Moravian School in Prussia, 1865-1869 and, the tribulations of being on jury service, 1845-1846 and a reference to an early example of a sponsored walk, 1840.
