Alfred, Henry Williams (respondents grandfather) was a merchant of cotton piece goods. His firm's address was Rhodesia House, Princess Street, Manchester. At the time of his first marriage Alfred Henry owned 85, Brunswick Street, Manchester. He married three times (see family tree). A daughter of his second marriage Gertrude May Williams was the respondents mother. Jane Williams (nee Maclean) was his second wife. She was among the first women to receive teacher training and was made head of Hale Barns school at the age of 21. Her family came from Chester. Her daughter, Gertrude May Williams also trained to be a teacher and a number of records in the collection document her progress.
