Simon (known as Sydney) Cohen was born in Manchester in 1894. He worked as a foreman in the garment industry. During World War I he was an army P.T. instructor, he served in 39th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers and the Loya North Lancashire Regiment., he rose to the rank of temp sgt. Sarah (nee Woolfson) his wife was born in Manchester in 1894, they got married in 1921 and they lived at 21, Elsworth St., Cheetham. Sarah Cohen was one of 4 sisters, she had a brother brother who died in infancy. Sarah and Sydney Cohen had 3 children - Phyllis, Philip and Joel. Sydney Cohen was a founder of the North-West branch of the British Legion and he was treasurer of the Manchester Jews Benevolent Society.
