Depositor was born in 1902; his father was a Blackburn born Jew but his mother was not Jewish. After his mother's death he went to live with paternal aunt in Devonshire Street, Higher Broughton, Manchester. Sam worked as a waterproof `schmearer' assistant, picture-faker and travelling optician before becoming established in his boxing caree c 1926. He boxed in and around Manchester and was known as the `Smiling Hebrew'. C.1935 he gave up boxing because his eyesight was deteriorating and went to work at Fairey's Aviation Works.
