Lou Black was born in 1904 in Burland Street, Cheetham to Jewish/Roumanian parents, who had left for Manchester with 4 children. Lou was the first English born child. The family moved around a lot when Lou was a child but they finally came to live in Broughton Lane in 1914. Lou's father was a tailor and his mother a midwife. After leaving Waterloo Road school Lou became a labority assistant at a wholesale manufacturing chemists - Olefield Patterson's - but he became ill over a love affair and finally left Manchester for Canada in . He stayed in the States until 1932 when he returned to Manchester.
