Ray was born in 1900 in Telz, Russia. She emigrated to Manchester with her parents when she was a baby c.1901 and settled in Moreton Street, Strangeways. They moved from there to Mary Street c.1904, Dewhurst Street c.1906 and Fairy Lane. Her father was a fruit hawker and then a grocery shop worker/traveller. Ray left Southall Street School and became a sewer on coats in 1914 and married Sam Cohen in 1919. Sam worked in his father's workshop making coats and going to markets. After their marriage he managed one of his father's shops. They lived in Faraday Avenue until 1937 and then Blackely New Road.
