Sarah Cohen, nee Bloom, was born in 1894 in Long Millgate to a father from Cowland and mother from Kovnah. They had emigrated in the late 1880 and 1890s. Her father was a fent dealer. The family lived on Cheetham Hill Road and Elizabeth Street. Sarah attended the Jews School, Smarts College, Market Street and became a book-keeper for her father. She married Sam Cohen in 1921. He was a gents outfitter.
