Henry was born in 1894 in Cheetwood Place to Jewish parents from Manchester and Brody. His mother had emigrated in the 1860s. Henry's father was a joiner and then caretaker of the Great Synagogue, Cheetham Hill Road, where the family lived from 1904. Henry went to the Jews school and then became indentured to a watchmaker. He eventually sold wireless parts.
