Emmanuel was born in 1901 in Ashton Old Road to a Jewish-immigrant father and Manchester mother. His father, Hyman Kurchuk (later Goodman) came from Lodz near Warsaw in c.1885-6 at the age of 16, following 2 brothers who had settled in Liverpool and Preston. His mother's father, Samuel Sasupskie was an immigrant glazier of the 1860s who had established a glazier's shop at the corner of Victoria Street and Ashton Old Road. Mary Sasupskie married Hyman Kurchuk in 1888 and lived in Openshaw.
