Fay is Lena and Bessie Cohen's sister. Their parents were born in Russia i Courland and in Marionpol, and they married in Leeds in the 1870s. Bessie was born in c.1879 in Leeds. Their father was a tailor's presser before he had a cloth shop in the parlour in Strangeways. Bessie left school when she was about 12 and joined John Tiller's dance troupe. Later her other sister Annie also joined. Bessie met and married Baron Rudolph Von Hybach on her travels when she was 17, but they later divorced and she remarried another non-Jewish man who had a lace business in Manchester. Annie married Stanley Hill and did a double act with him as Lune and Shaw.
