Mick was born in 1893 in Whitfield Street, Manchester to a Lithuanian father and Latvian mother who had come to Manchester in c.1891-2. He was the eldest of 10 children His father was a tailor. He went to the Jews school and joined the Jewish Lads Brigade in c.1904. This was only 5 years after it had been founded in Manchester, while it was still held in the Jews school. Only in 1907 did Grove House Lads Club on Bury New Road open. He stayed with JLB for a number of years and helped put up many camps. After leaving school he became a tailor.
