Evelyn Leon nee Silverman was born in 1900 in Hewitt Street, Hightown to Jewish parents. Her father was from Roumania and her mother from Manchester. Her father was a textile merchant. Evelyn attended St. Johns and Heath Street schools and married Solly Leon in 1920. He had a smallware business. From Hewitt Street the family moved to Petworth Street, Bignor Street, 328 Cheetham Hill Road and then to Waterpark Road in 1917.
