Rosie Levy nee Cohen was born in 1890 in Alexandria to Sephardi Jewish parents. Her father and mother had been born in Morocco but later moved to Alexandria where her father was a cotton merchant. The family came to Wilbraham Road, Manchester in 1901 and Rosie attended the Withington Girls school. Rosie moved to Clyde Road in 1908 when she married Joe Levy, a cotton merchant, born in Turkey. They later lived in Barlow Moor Road. Rosie later opened a boarding house in Harrogate in 1936 when a slump in the cotton trade seriously affected the family's fortunes.
