Morris was born in 1897 Bury New Road to a Russian immigrant and an English mother. The family moved to Marlborough Road in c.1902 and to 86 Broughton Lane in c.1907. Morris attended Waterloo Road school, and then Grecian Street school. His father had a tailor shop in Robert Street. Morris worked for textile merchants when he left school but then in 1931 he started klapping (buying gold and silver). He had been in the army during the First World War.
