Benny Rosen was born in 1915 in St. James Road, Manchester to Jewish immigrants from Latvia and Riga who emigrated c.1900. Benny's father was first a traveller and market trader but then he opened a drapery shop and a wholesale place in town. Benny had one sister and one brother. He attended Marlborough Road school then Garnett Street and then Salford Secondary school after which he helped in his father's drapery business.
