Saul was born in 1905 in Bury New Road, Strangeways to a Russian Jewish father from near Kiev and an English born Jewish mother. His father had emigrated in 1888. He had originally been a capmaker then a jewellery traveller but then he became a butcher - the sho being on Bury New Road. Saul attended Waterloo Road School and then became an office boy and than a butcher in his father's business. In 1919 the family moved to Great Cheetham Street West. Saul belonged to the North Manchester Literary Society and the tennis team of the Waterpark Club.
