Emmanuel Goodman was born in 1901 at 465 Ashton Old Road (later number 873) to a Polish Jewish father from Lodz and an English Jewish mother. His mother's father Samuel Sasupskie was an immigrant glazier of the 1860s who had established a glazier's shop at the corner of Victoria Street and Ashton Old Road.
