Marjorie's father Samuel Claff was born in Korno Geborn (Lithuania). He emigrated in c.1882/3. He was the youngest of 11 children, born to a chazan/shochet. He started as a pedlar in South England, later establishing a furniture company in Warrington and Manchester, and eventually a money lending business. He was active in many of Manchester Jewry's communal organisations, a founder of the Jewish Hospital and benefactor of the Claff Shul (Holy Law Synagogue), Red Bank.
