Martin was born in 1911 in Rydal Mount to a father from Vienna and mother from Russia. They had come to Manchester in c.1908 after meeting and marrying in London. Martin lost his father in 1917 and his mother struggled with a weekly payment business. He was the 5th of 6 children and went to Marlborough Road school, the Jews school and Salford Grammar. His mother died when he was 14. He left school and became an errand boy, then an under presser, then a waterproof hand. In 1933 he joined the Y.C.L. and married in 1937. He was an active member of the Y.C.L., organised camps etc.
