Marion Stanistreet was born in Ashton-on-Mersey in 1918. Her father, George Derbyshire, was from an old Ashton family and was a golf professional at Ashton Club for 50 years. He married Marian's mother, Elizabeth Jane Humphries who had come to Sale to be a parlour maid in Moss Lane. Elizabeth had come from Fair Oak in Staffordshire. Marian's paternal grandfather had been the local poacher, spending a lot of time in Ashton-on-Mersey Stocks. She married James Stanistreet
