Mrs. Burgess, nee Frances Lockitt, was born in Glossop in 1910 and went straight into the mill as a weaver after school. Her father was a policeman at Hyde all his life (bar the war years). Her mother, Mary Ellen Powell was from Macclesfield and came to Hyde at the age of 12 to be in service to a photographer. Mrs. Burgess was Hyde's first Cotton Queen in 1931.
