Custodial history:
The Youth Development Trust was founded in 1963. A grass-roots, non-governmental organisation, it used the detached youth work approach with young people. It undertook commissions from a variety of different agencies using the method of action-research (fieldwork supported by research). Its work contributed to thinking and practice in the fields of outreach, preventative, anti-racist and mental health work with vulnerable young people at the edges of society.
The Trust had a decentralised management structure. The management of a project was shared between the project team and lay members who formed a Project Management Committee for each project. The Youth Deveopment Trust's Central Office was shut in 1991 following City Council budget cuts but projects which were underway were able to continue independently.
